Character selection:
The book The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls narrates the life experiences of the Walls
family, made up of the narrator (Jeanette), her two siblings and her parents (Rex Walls-father
and Rosemary Walls-mother). One of the key players in the book is Rex, who I chose to
assess in this essay.
Assessment of disorder
The DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for narcissistic personality disorder requires a patient to
present five of the following nine symptoms:
Grandiose- a sense of self-importance, characterized by need to be recognized as
superior in every sense.
Preoccupied with fantasies of big achievements, including brilliance, power, success,
beauty or ideal love
Excessive need for admiration
Impulses of self-admiration as being unique or special to extents of wanting to
associate with high-ranking personalities, who one thinks can understand them
Lack of empathy, characterized by inability to connect with feelings of others.
Arrogance, haughty attitudes and behavior
Feeling entitled, and expects others to automatically comply with his/her wishes or
expectations
Highly exploitative, manipulative and thrives in taking advantage of others to achieve
personal goals.
