Selection of Experimental Analysis
Functional behavior analysis is an essential aspect of child development and
examination as it allows individuals to identify the leading causes of challenging
behavior, especially with an autistic child. Several approaches and methods are helpful in
functional behavior analysis in children, including the Interview Informed Synthesized
Contingency Analysis (IISCA), a valuable procedure for assessing and identifying
behavior. This approach is vital in understanding issues in a child’s behavior as well as in
the development of personalized interventions. The critical component of the IISCA is
that it is mainly conducted by an individual who understands the child in question
(Flanagan & DeBar, 2017). The main objective of applying this approach is to gather
information regarding the potential meanings of behavior, such as whether a child
behaves in specific ways for attention, escaping demands, or accessing various needs.
Benefits of the Selected Experimental Analysis
It is comprehensive. One of the main advantages of this method is that it
incorporates interviews and experimental analysis, where one collects data from people
who know the child better. In other words, it is an approach that allows the collection of
in-depth data from the people close to the child.
Flexible: The method is flexible regarding adoption into different settings and
populations as it provides individualized behavioral insights (Coffey et al., 2019).
Efficient: Studies show that IISCA is an efficient approach as it is quicker and
less invasive than other methods of functional analysis (Flanagan & DeBar, 2017). In this
regard, IISC has become very common and helpful, especially with limited resources and
time.

Limitations of the Selected Experimental Analysis
Relies on individual accuracy: The main disadvantage of this method is that it
relies heavily on information from interviews given by people such as teachers and
caregivers. The accuracy of such people is the only source of information, which makes it
less applicable, exposes it to potential biases, and can result in ineffective interventions.
In other words, the collected information may not reflect the actual functional behavior.
Variations in behavioral responses: The main issue with the IISCA is that people
interviewed can respond differently in an analysis setting compared to real-life situations
(Lundy et al., 2021). In this case, people may present a different persona in an interview
setting than in the actual environment. Such behavior leads to less accurate results that
fail to reflect daily life behavior, leading to less applicable conclusions in the
environment.
Limited to observable behavior: The IISCA examines easily observed and
quantified behavior (Coffey et al., 2019). It does not examine various experiences,
feelings, or thoughts contributing to a person's outward behavior. The main problem with
examining observable behavior is that it overlooks complex and underlying emotional
and cognitive contributors to how people act.
Rationale for Selecting the Experimental Analysis Approach &
Compassionate/Cultural Variables
There are various limitations associated with the IISCA method, but it offers a
precise function identification. The rationale for choosing IISCA is that it permits one to
identify the role of behavior, which can be done by manipulating antecedents and
outcomes. Studies show that variations in conditions like sensory simulation are crucial
