,born in west liberty ohio,18 at founding, graduated 1857,
pulled off DKE badge at all important dinner meeting of 1855,
joined lockwood in designing the white ross, determined to
come up with something different than the shield and
diamond type of that time, known for his fearlessness and
idealism, it was this type and quality of spirit he instilled in
sigma chi throughout his life, runkle selection of the white
cross grew for it admiration of its meaning, he was inspired
with the story of emperor constantine and his vision on the
night before the battle for rome, he believed constantine was
a heroic character and he convinced other founders to pattern
sigma chi symbolism after the vision of constantine, his
courage and idealism during his miami days also lead to a
temporary suspension from the university for fighting in
chapel with a beta theta pi member who publicly sneered at
his badge, he had most noteworthy military career of any of
the founders, at outbreak of civil war he volunteered with a
militia company and was a colonel by the end of the war, by
November 1865, he was a major general, seriously wounded
in Battle of shiloh and left for dead, former DKE rival,
whitelaw reid, wrote his obituary but reports of runkles death
were wrong an he actually outlived reid, like many military
men, he never felt entirely comfortable in civilian life and
would have preferred to stay in service for the rest of his days,
he did stay in for some time after the war, but was retired due
to wounds received in the line of duty,after military career, he
was ordained as an episcopal priest, also he was the only one

grand consul from 1895-97, he spent last years of his life in
hillsboro ohio, where he died o
