Erythropoiesis – Introduction
Erythropoiesis is the biological process through which red blood cells (RBCs) or
erythrocytes are produced. These cells play a vital role in transporting oxygen from the
lungs to different body tissues and carrying carbon dioxide back for exhalation.
The word “erythropoiesis” is derived from:
Erythro → red
Poiesis → formation
So, erythropoiesis literally means “formation of red blood cells.”
