Chapter 3, 4 and 5- Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde




Summary
Utterson meets up with Jekyll to discuss his will after seeing that Jekyll wants all
his belongings to go to Hyde if he goes missing for more than 3 months. Jekyll
has to reassure Utterson about Hyde as Utterson doesn't trust Hyde.

A year later a man was clubbed to death in the street by Hyde.

A letter addressed to Utterson is found on the body. The police contact him. He
recognises the murder weapon as the broken half of a walking cane he gave to
Jekyll years later. Jekyll leads the police to Hyde's house to be told he hasn't
been there for 2 months but find the other half of the cane.

" The large handsome face of Dr Jekyll grew pale to the very lips" - This " I think I can take you to his house" -This tells us how Utterson doesn't want
conveys how Jekyll doesn't want to talk about his will and Hyde. It shows how he to protect Hyde and thinks he deserves to be found out. Utterson doesn't realise
wants to hide the Hyde part of him and not let details about him out. that Jekyll and Hyde are the same people.

"I have been wanting to speak to you Jekyll began to latter ' yal know "With ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot" - This tells us
that will be yours" - This is important because it starts to build up the chapter and about the anger Hyde is showing when murdering him. Ape- like fury links to
add interest for the reader. darwins theory of evolution and how humans developed from apes.

"I do not care to hear more" - This illustrates how Jekyll feels about talking "He recognised it for one that had himself presented many years before
about Hyde and doesn't like to give information out about him. to Henry Jekyll" - Conveys the link between Jekyll and Hyde, a clue that the
characters are linked together.
"The lawyer" - This shows us how Utterson feels about Hyde and also how he still
thinks Hyde and Jekyll are two different people. "The room bore every mark of having been recently and hurriedly
ransacked" - Shows how Hyde had a fast getaway and has left home.

Chapter 5- Incident of the letter
Utterson goes to Jekyll's house and finds him "looking dealy sick". He asks about Hyde but Jekyll shows him a letter that says he won't be back. Utterson believes the letter
has been forged by Jekyll to cover for Hyde.
