Week 1
Osmosis Lab Report
Name: Breanna Simmons
Date: _08-26-25________________________
Purpose: To apply the scientific method to observe and report on the process of osmosis and to
investigate the effect of osmosis in cells in different solutions.
Directions: Please read the Osmosis Lab instructions fully before beginning your experiment.
Also read the textbook passages related to osmosis before filling out the report. Use this report
form to record your predictions, observations, analysis, and conclusions. Please leave the report
prompts intact and simply type your responses under each prompt. Because this report form is
standard, SafeAssign will flag it with a large overlap score- do not concern yourself with this
issue for this report.
Hypotheses
Reflect on your readings related to osmosis and cell membranes. Consider the four solutions in
which you will immerse gummy bears. Briefly explain what you think will happen to the
different gummy bears under the different conditions. Be as specific and as detailed as possible.
Use the understanding of osmosis that you have developed from reading the text.
Solution Hypothesis Explanation
Water I theorize that the gummy bear will I believe this will happen because
Only increase in size and mass. water will move into the gummy by
osmosis, causing it to swell.
Salt Water I theorize the size and mass of the gummy I believe this will happen because
bear will decrease. the salt solution is more
concentrated than the fluid inside
the gummy, therefor pulling the
water out and making it shrink.
Sugar I theorize the size and mass of the gummy I believe this will happen because
Water bear will increase, but less than the bear in the sugar solution is more
plain water. concentrated than plain water, so
less water moves in compared to
cup #1.
No I theorize the size of the gummy bear will I believe this because it will lose

Materials and Methods
See Osmosis Lab Instructions document for materials and methods. A metric ruler will be
necessary to measure the length, height, and width in mm.

, Use the tables below to record your observations of the gummy bears after Part 1 of the lab and
after Part 2 of the lab.
Part 1 Results
a. Record the measurements of the length, height, and width of your gummy bears in Table
1.1 before you place each of them in an experimental solution.
* Estimate the volume by multiplying the length x height x width.
Table 1.1 Length, height, width of gummy bears (in millimeters, before treatment)
Measurement Cup # 1 Cup #2 Cup #3 Cup #4
Solution: water only Salt water Sugar water No liquid
Length (mm) 20 20 20 20
Height (mm) 10 10 10 10
Width (mm) 7 7 7 7
Estimated Volume 1400 1400 1400 1400
Part 2 Results
a. Briefly describe the steps taken to perform this experiment. How would you describe the
process to someone who has not read the lab instructions?
1. Label 4 cups #1-#4 and add the solutions: #1 water, #2 salt water (1/2 cup water + 1
Tbsp salt, stirred to dissolve), #3 sugar water (1/2 cup water + 1 Tbsp sugar, stirred),
#4 no liquid
2. Measure each gummy bear’s length, height, and width (mm) and record in table 1.1
3. Place one gummy bear into each cup and leave undisturbed for 12-24 hours.
4. Carefully remove each gummy bear, gently blot surface moisture, and re-measure
length, height, and width.
5. Record observations of changes in the bears and solutions; calculate estimated
volumes and changes.
