Industrialisation in Türkiye increased the rights of women. In addition,
better educational opportunities have transformed the traditional family
structure. In particular, the active participation of women in working life
has also led to changes in roles within the home. As a result, there has
been an increase in the number of divorces, as well as a fall in the birth
rate. Migration, poverty, different social values, technological developments
and economic difficulties are some of the reasons for postponing
marriage. Now, in most big cities, choosing your own spouse is accepted
as normal. Despite this, old habits die hard and in some places parents
still decide who marries whom.
