ANSWER:
Principal reforms that Diocletian and Constantine implemented in an effort to
maintain the Roman Empire
Diocletian was a Roman Emperor of the Roman Empire. He reign was for twenty years.
He was one of the warrior emperor who was born in a poor state but made his way up
in military ranks.for him to become emperor he had to fight the dead last emperor son
which he won. His other famous counterpart is known is Constatine.Diocletian and
Constantine brought the revolution in the Roman society to its logical end.
Diocletian reformed the monetary sytem. This he did by increasing increased the gold
content together with the value of Aureus. He also managed to replace silver Denarius
with Argenteus which at that time had a significantly higher value. Diocletian also
introduced an unfair tax system that was inconsistent. He did this because hyperinflation
had made the coins virtually worthless and therefore he decided to resort to requisitions
as taxation. He confiscated private assets if payments could not be fully made in gold.
The decurions were the ones who collected the taxes since they were the administrator
of the cities. Heavy taxation led to the fall of standards of living and many people left
their economic activities since they could not afford to sustain the living standards. Lastly
Diocletian also persecuted Christians.
Constantine on the other hand, managed to replace the Aureus with the Solidus, a god
coin which was of lower value than the previous one. He also left the attempt to revive
the silver coins. The solidus proved to be a reliable and of appropriate gold standard. It
retained the same size and purity during the late empire. The chronic problems were
solved thanks to the stability it provided. He also resorted various confiscation measures
for the gold. However, solidus introduction only increased the gap between rich and poor
rather than solving it. This means it only benefitted those who could afford the gold
coins.
