Introduction
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is developed by the Assessment Technologies
Institute (ATI) and serves as a standardized admission test for nursing and allied health
programs. It evaluates foundational academic knowledge required for success in nursing school.
The TEAS Version 7, the most current version, includes 170 questions (150 scored and 20
unscored) that must be completed in 209 minutes (3 hours and 29 minutes).

Purpose

what nurses must do when reading patient charts, policies, or medical literature.

Topic vs. Main Idea:
o Topic = what the passage is about.
o Main Idea = the author’s central point about the topic.
Supporting Details: Facts, examples, and evidence that reinforce the main idea.
Inference: Draw conclusions beyond explicit statements using contextual clues.
Summarizing: Condense a passage into a single, concise statement capturing its essence.
2. Craft and Structure
Author’s Purpose: Identify whether the text aims to inform, persuade, entertain, or
describe.
Tone and Bias: Evaluate the author’s attitude and detect emotional or subjective
language.
Text Features: Recognize headings, charts, graphs, and bullet lists that enhance
comprehension.
Text Structures: Understand common organizational patterns (cause/effect,
compare/contrast, sequence, problem/solution).
