QUESTION 1: Method Study and Work Measurement (6 Marks)
1.1 Knowledge Gained from Studying the Two Techniques
From studying work study, I learned that it is a scientific approach used to improve how work is
performed and to measure how efficiently that work is done. It has two main parts — method
study and work measurement — which together aim to increase productivity, reduce waste,
and improve the use of people, machines, and materials in an organisation (UNISA, 2015).
Method study focuses on how work is carried out. It examines each step in a process to remove
unnecessary movements, simplify operations, and create a smoother workflow. This technique
aims to develop a safe, effective, and standardised method that saves time and effort.
Once the best working method has been established, work measurement is applied to find out
how long it should take a trained worker to complete a job using that method. It involves
timing, analysing, and setting realistic work standards that can be used for planning, scheduling,
and performance evaluation.
When both techniques are correctly applied, they reduce inefficiency, improve morale, and
ensure that production systems operate at their full potential. Method study improves the way
work is done, while work measurement ensures the time used is fair and efficient — together
leading to sustained organisational productivity (UNISA, 2015).
My Own Definition of Method Study
Method study is the organised process of observing, questioning, and improving how a task is
performed in order to design a simpler, safer, and more effective way of working that saves
time and effort while maintaining quality.
