When establishing a business, entrepreneurs usually define a vision, mission, and
goals. Assume you are appointed as the business manager of Mahlodi’s Kitchen.
Your first assignment is to: Formulate a vision statement (2) and mission
statements (5) for Mahlodi’s Kitchen.

Vision and Mission Statements
A vision statement expresses a firm’s long-term aspiration and purpose. For Mahlodi’s
Kitchen, the vision might emphasize her goal of providing home-style African comfort food
and community to students: for example, “To become the leading campus eatery offering
authentic African home-style meals that bring comfort and a sense of home to students.”
This is inspired by the case note that “her food provides comfort to young people far from
home, reminding them of their roots”. In contrast, mission statements are concrete
declarations of what the business does, how it does it, and for whom. For Mahlodi’s
Kitchen, appropriate mission statements could be:
Authentic Cuisine: To serve delicious, traditional African dishes e.g. mogodu, pap,
chakalaka, chicken stew every day, providing students and staff with a taste of home.
Affordability and Value: To offer generous portions at affordable prices, ensuring every
customer feels nourished and valued
Welcoming Atmosphere: To create a warm, family-like dining environment on campus,
where customers feel comforted and connected to African culture.
