16. 4 Flagyl (metronidazole) is a commonly used drug for bacterial vaginosis (BV). It is
always important to remember not to drink alcohol with Flagyl during treatment or
up to 3 days after completing the treatment. Combing alcohol and Flagyl can cause
a disulfiram- like reaction and includes symptoms such as flushing, headache,
nausea, vomiting and rapid heart rate.
17. 5 A penicillin allergy is an abnormal reaction of your immune system to the antibiotic
penicillin. Symptoms can include skin rash, hives, itching, swelling around the face,
hands and feet, breathing diflculties and anaphylaxis, which is a severe life-threat-
ening reaction that can cause diflculty breathing, a drop in blood pressure and
a loss of consciousness. A penicillin allergy will occur when the immune system
identifies penicillin as a harmful substance and attacks it. If a patient develops an
allergy to penicillin, it needs to be stopped immediately.
