Organic Chemistry 2273A Laboratory, Section 043
Monday, November 7th 2016
Objective
In experiment two liquid-liquid extraction was done on an organic acid, base and neutral
components. Recrystallization was done to purify the organic solids and then the melting points
were compared from before and after the recrystallization.
Introduction
In this lab the organic acid, neutral and base were extracted from a mixture containing benzoic
acid, azobenzene and 3-nitroaniline. These were then crystallized and filtered using Buchner
filtration. The melting points were observed of the acid, neutral and base. The crystals were
recrystallized and then filtered again using Buchner filtration. The melting points were then
observed of the purified crystals and IR spectra was taken from the purified crystals.
Procedure
The lab was performed following the procedures outlined in the Chem 2273a Laboratory manual
2016. There were no changes made in the lab procedure. Some errors in this lab could be from
the transferring of crystals. The crystals were transferred back and forth from scale to beakers, to
plastic bags which could have resulted in loss of some crystals.
