. SECTION 1: PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT IN REAL-LIFE CONTEXTS (20 marks) • You need to
select ONE of the three contexts (developmental, educational, or organisational) in your
everyday life in which psychological testing is done. • You will describe the testing done in this
context by answering the questions below. Please do not just provide a theoretical discussion
from the textbook - you need to share your observations, experiences, and thoughts based on
actual exposure to the context, be it in person, through conversation with specialists in the
context, etcetera. • NOTE that you are NOT allowed to administer tests. • The maximum length
is 3 pages. Three applied contexts of testing are covered in this module, namely 1)
developmental assessment and assessment of learning problems of infants, pre-school and
primary school children; 2) assessment in an educational context for career counselling; 3) and
assessment in organisational contexts. We want you to explore how psychological testing is
done in these contexts in everyday life. Below are some ideas. Note that you must have an in-
depth theoretical understanding of assessment in the context you explore before gaining
exposure to this context. Your sources of information must be able to provide valid information
on psychological assessment. Developmental Educational/Career counselling Organisational
You, a friend, or a family member may have a child in primary school. What happens in this
context if a child has learning difficulties? Perhaps the school makes use of the services of an
educational psychologist. If the school and/or the parents do not have the resources to do so,
there might be efforts to have additional classes to assist the children who are struggling with
their schoolwork. This highlights the issue of the availability of assessment services to South
African communities. Note that your answers should focus on the use of psychological
assessment measures in this context. If you or someone you know has a child who must make
subject choices in Grade 9, the school may inform parents of the availability of psychologists
who will provide career counselling that involves psychological assessment. You may have

,contacted the student counselling services at Unisa, or you may work with or know of an
organisation that helps employees with assessment for career counselling. Note that your
answers should focus on the use of psychological assessment measures in this context. Were
you or someone you know tested when applying for a job? If so, what was this experience like?
Perhaps you work in a context where testing is done for high-risk jobs. Note that your answers
should focus on the use of psychological assessment measures in this context. Please note that
your answers should focus on psychological assessment per se and reflect a thorough
understanding of the syllabus covered in this module. No formal research needs to be
undertaken. Nevertheless, you need to adhere to ethical practices, such as informing people
that 6 you will be reporting information in your assignment, requesting consent to do so, and
ensuring confidentiality – no names of organisations, institutions, or individuals should be used
in your assignment. If you use pseudonyms, indicate that these are not the real names.

Selected Context: Educational – Career Counselling

Question 1 (3 marks)

a) Identify the context you selected. (1)
I selected the educational context, specifically the use of psychological assessment in career
counselling for Grade 9 learners.

b) Briefly describe the real-life situation you explored. (2)
I explored a situation involving my younger cousin (pseudonym: “Thabo”), a Grade 9 learner at a
public school in Gauteng. Earlier this year, he had to make subject choices for Grade 10, which
would later influence his career path. His school provided access to a visiting educational
psychologist, who administered several psychological assessments to help learners make
informed subject and career choices. I spoke to Thabo and his parents about the process, as
well as to the school’s Life Orientation teacher, who facilitated the assessment arrangements.
This gave me insight into how career counselling is conducted in practice at the school level, and
how psychological assessments are used to support learners during this decision-making
process.

Which psychological tests are used in the context you selected, and for what purpose?

The following tests were used during the career counselling process:

, 1. Jackson Vocational Interest Survey (JVIS) (or a similar career interest inventory):
This test assessed Thabo’s preferences across various occupational areas. The goal was
to match his interests with possible career fields and suggest relevant subjects for high
school. For example, if he scored high in scientific and investigative interests, it would
suggest STEM-related career paths.

2. Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) or similar personality assessment:
This was used to explore Thabo’s personality traits, such as whether he preferred
working with people or independently, his level of openness to new experiences, and his
emotional stability. These traits can influence both career satisfaction and success.

3. General Aptitude Battery or Basic Aptitude Test:
This assessed Thabo’s cognitive strengths across different areas such as verbal reasoning,
numerical ability, and spatial reasoning. These results helped identify academic areas
where he might excel and supported decisions about subject suitability, like whether to
take Physical Science or Accounting.

These psychological tests aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of Thabo’s
interests, personality, and abilities. Together, they helped in making more informed and realistic
subject and career choices.

uestion 2 (5 marks)

Describe the assessment process that is followed in this context.

The assessment process at Thabo’s school started when learners were informed during a Life
Orientation class about the upcoming career guidance sessions. Consent forms were sent to
parents, and learners who received consent were scheduled for individual and group
assessments with a registered educational psychologist who visited the school.

The process began with a brief group information session where learners were told what the
assessments would involve and how the results would be used. This was followed by the
administration of several standardised psychological assessments. These included a career
interest inventory, a personality questionnaire, and a basic aptitude test. Each assessment
session was supervised, and test-taking conditions were kept uniform to ensure reliability.

After the tests were scored and interpreted, each learner was given a short one-on-one
feedback session with the psychologist. A feedback letter summarising the results was also sent
home to parents. The school encouraged parents to attend an optional group feedback session
to better understand how to support their children in subject and career planning.
