Philosophy in Education
1. Introduction
My development as a future educator has been influenced by my studies, exposure to
different learning environments, and my personal dedication to lifelong learning. I intend
to work in South Africa’s higher education sector, with a particular focus on promoting
inclusive and transformative teaching practices. In a country marked by historical
inequalities and continuing socio-economic struggles, I view education as a means of
empowerment and social redress. My career goal is not only to share knowledge but
also to foster critical thinking, creativity, and learner agency.
Having a personal philosophy of teaching and learning is essential for my professional
growth because it provides a consistent set of values and practices that guide my work.
It also ensures that I remain reflective, responsive to the diverse needs of students, and
aligned with the broader national goals of equity, inclusivity, and social change.
2. Teaching and Learning Philosophy Statement
I hold the view that the core purpose of education is to cultivate learners who are
critical, reflective, and empowered to play an active role in society. Learning should not
be limited to knowledge transfer; instead, it should challenge learners to ask questions,
think creatively, and solve problems that relate to real-life issues. My role as an
educator is to design and guide meaningful learning opportunities that integrate theory
with practice, giving learners the chance to build knowledge actively rather than absorb
it passively (Vygotsky, 1978).
My teaching approach is shaped by learner-centred and constructivist principles. I strive
to build an inclusive classroom environment that values diversity and validates the
identities of all students. This includes applying differentiated teaching methods,
