adapt to changing environments.”

1.1 There are various mechanisms that organisations can use, in combination, to
become a learning organisation. Apply any FIVE of these mechanisms to the Michelin
company throughout its history of publishing the Michelin Guide.

Answer

1. Shared Vision
A learning organisation needs a clear and compelling vision that is shared across
all levels. Michelin created such a vision when the Michelin brothers launched the
Michelin Guide in 1900. Their vision was not only to sell more tyres but also to
encourage mobility and transform travel culture. This vision guided employees
and managers in aligning their efforts towards expanding the company’s
influence beyond tyres and into hospitality and gastronomy.
2. Team Learning
Team learning emphasises collective problem-solving and knowledge sharing. At
Michelin, anonymous inspectors collaborated to evaluate restaurants consistently
and fairly. This teamwork allowed the company to build credibility for the Guide
and ensured that Michelin’s reputation for accuracy and reliability was maintained
globally.
3. Systems Thinking
A core mechanism of a learning organisation is systems thinking, where different
functions and activities are seen as interconnected. Michelin demonstrated this
by linking its tyre business with the Guide. By understanding that promoting
travel would also increase tyre usage, Michelin used a systems perspective to
grow both industries simultaneously.
