Short Answer Questions
Directions: For each short answer question, please type your response
below the question.
1. What is the function of the cardiac conduction system? Within this
system, what is the specific role of the SA node?
Provide your answer here.
The cardiac conduction system is a network of specialized cell that controls the
heartbeat. The SA onde is the hearts natural pacemaker, it generates electrical
impulses that causes the artia to contract.
2. What is the role of red blood cells in the body? Where within the body do
red blood cells become reoxygenated? What method of transport moves
oxygen between the blood and the body tissues?
Provide your answer here.
The red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the body and then return cardon
dioxide from the tissues, back to the lungs to be exhaled. They contain a protein
called hemoglobin that binds the oxygen and carries it to the body cells. This
is what gives the color red.
The red blood cells become reoxygenated in the lungs, they are within the
alveoli.
, The method of transport that moves the oxygen between the blood and the
body tissue is diffusion, where the oxygen diffuse into the bloodstream and
binds to the hemoglobin within the red blood cells
3. What is the role of white blood cells in the body? Where within the body do
white blood cells live?
Provide your answer here.
The white blood cells supports the immune response by identifying and
destroying harmful invaders like parasites, bacteria, and viruses.
White blood cells spend most of their lives in the connective tissue and NOT in
the bloodstream.
4. Beginning with the vena cava, explain the pathway blood takes through the
heart and body. Be sure to include all four heart chambers and all four
heart valves in your answer. Please note when blood is oxygenated and when
blood is deoxygenated during this cycle.
