Implicit Bias
Implicit Bias: the unconscious attitudes or stereotypes that affect our
understanding, actions and decisions

Media Bias: The tendency of news media to report in a way that reinforces a
viewpoint, a world view, preference, political ideology, corporate or financial
interest, moral framework, or policy inclination, instead of reporting in an
objective way (simply describing the facts)

How to Fight Bias

The National Institutes of Health recommends:
● Acknowledge your bias
● Learn more about yourself
● Get out of your comfort zone
● Practice self-monitoring and self-reflection
● Admit your mistakes

Types of Bias:

Big story bias: Journalists’ judgment is clouded by their perceptions of an
event or development as a major, important story

Corporate bias: Business interests of a news outlet - including advertisers and
its parent company - influence coverage

Demographic bias: Race, gender, ethnicity or other factors - such as culture or
economic class - distort news coverage

Neutrality bias: A journalist or news outlet tries so hard to avoid appearing
biased that the coverage misinterprets the facts

Partisan bias: Journalists’ own political views affect news coverage
