Problem 1
Problem Statement
ComputerWorld reports the population job-satisfaction distribution for information sys-
tems managers as: Very satisfied 28%, Somewhat satisfied 46%, Neither 12%, Somewhat
dissatisfied 10%, Very dissatisfied 4%.
A sample of 500 computer programmers produced the observed counts:
• Very satisfied: 105
• Somewhat satisfied: 235
• Neither: 55
• Somewhat dissatisfied: 90
• Very dissatisfied: 15
At significance level α = 0.05, test whether the job-satisfaction distribution for computer
programmers differs from that of information systems managers.
Step 1 — Test & hypotheses; approach
We use a chi-square goodness-of-fit test.
H0 : Programmers follow the same distribution as managers.
H1 : Programmers do not follow that distribution.
Degrees of freedom:
df = k − 1 = 5 − 1 = 4
Critical value: χ20.95,4 ≈ 9.488.
