Theory as the Engine of Research: Significance and Limitations of Theorisation
The idea that “theory is the engine of research” means that theory drives the research
process by shaping the questions we ask, the methods we use, and the way we
interpret results. In many fields, theory brings together ideas and gives structure to
knowledge. For example, Longo and Soto (2016) explain that theories help organise
knowledge and provide a framework for making sense of observations and experiments.
Similarly, Bordage and Dawson (2003) note that theory influences every part of the
research process from developing a question, to choosing methods, to collecting and
analysing data, and finally drawing conclusions. These views highlight that theory is
central in deciding what to study and how to approach it. At the same time, this claim
requires careful consideration. Though the theory is very useful in guiding research, it
can also limit or bias the way we see things. Understanding this balance involves
looking at how theory shapes research questions, design, and interpretation, with
examples from natural sciences, social sciences, and education, as well as considering
arguments for approaches that rely less on theory and more on direct observation.
, The Role of Theory in Shaping Research
Defining “theory.” In research, a theory is generally a coherent set of concepts and
propositions that explain relationships between phenomena. It may be grand (broad and
abstract) or middle-range/specific as a model of understanding, a theory offers a lens
through which researchers conceptualize a problem. For instance, in social sciences a
theory might posit how social class affects behavior; in natural science, a physical
theory like gravitation posits laws that systems follow.
Guiding Research Questions. Theoretical frameworks often determine which research
questions are meaningful. Collins and Stockton note that the “influence of theory
permeates almost every aspect of the study even if the author does not recognize this
influence. In practical terms, a theory suggests gaps or predictions to test. Higgs argues
in the context of education that “theoretical frameworks determine the problems that can
be addressed” by researchers and the adequacy of proposed solutions. In other words,
theory both generates questions through highlighting unexplained phenomena and
narrows them (by focusing on theory-specific factors). For example, a researcher
guided by Piaget’s theory of cognitive development will ask different questions about
child learning than one guided by behaviorist theory.
Informing Methodology.
Theory influences the choice of methods and design. When a researcher adopts a
deductive, theory-driven approach, the methodology will be chosen to test the theory’s
implications e.g. specific experiments or surveys to confirm a hypothesis. As one source

a loose theoretical orientation might suggest emergent design e.g. grounded theory. In
