The Middle Ages 1

, What is the Middle Ages?
⇒ It’s the period between 5th century BC - 15th century
→ The Fall of Western Roman empire was the starting point but the end point can be multiple things
like Columbus arriving in Americas, Invention of the printing press, renaissance,…
⇒ The term was introduced during the Renaissance by Italian Humanists, but people who lived during this
period weren’t conscious of living in the Middle Ages
Decline & Fall of the Western Roman Empire

Couple of reasons that led to the decline of W.R.E

Political instability, internal conflicts & corruption

economic troubles, heavy taxation, reliance on slave labor

military decline due to mercenary armies & invasions

Migration from Germanic people ( Goths, Vandals,…)

410 CE ⇒ sack of Rome by the Visigoths

476 CE ⇒ Deposement of the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus, by the goths
The Eastern Roman Empire
a.k.a. Byzantine Empire thrived for another 1000 years
→ Constantinople became the center of trade, culture & power
Justinian I

→ he expanded the empire, ordered to build the Hagia Sophia, consolidation of Justinian Code which
became the legal foundation for European legal systems
→ He also blended Greco-Roman traditions with Christian influences
The Great Schism
→ separation between the Eastern Christian churches led by Patriarch of Constantinople and the Western
church led by the Pope
⇒ Constantinople got conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1453, marking the empire’s end
