Assignment 9A

The nervous system is a network that consists of the spinal cord , the brain and network of
nerves. The nervous system is divided into two main components the CNS(central nervous
system) and the PNS(peripheral nervous system)

The image below shows the two nervous systems on the human body.

Sensory neurons have an important role in transmitting information regarding the control of
heart rate and ventilation. Heart rate and ventilation are mainly controlled by the autonomic
nervous system, the sensory neurons report back to different receptors and help change their
functions if needed. Sensory neurons control the heart rate and ventilation by sensing vital
information about the blood gas levels, the blood pressure and the lung volume. They make
sure that the body keeps an appropriate respiratory and cardiovascular rate.

Motor neurons that are in the autonomic system are responsible for, managing the heart rate
and ventilation, the motor neurons carry out the commands that are given by the brainstem,

, the brainstem makes these commands going on the information the sensory neurons feedback.
This allows the motor neurons to control the heart rate and ventilation.

CNS (Central Nervous System)

Consists of the brain and spinal cord which are protected by the vertebral column. The brain
controls the nervous system which is responsible for processing sensory information. Sensory
information are things the brain collects from senses like emotions , thought , actions , touch.

PNS(Peripheral Nervous System)

The Peripheral nervous system is made up of all the nerves outside of the CNS. It can be divided
up into the Somatic and autonomic nervous systems.

Voluntary movement and sensory perception are controlled by the somatic nervous system.
Motor neurons control skeletal muscles, and sensory neurons send information from sensory
receptors to the CNS.

ANS(Autonomic nervous system)

The autonomic nervous system controls the body's involuntary activities including heart rate,
blood pressure, digestion, and respiration. It is made up of the sympathetic nervous system,
which then stimulates the body's fight-or-flight reaction, and the parasympathetic nervous
system, which promotes rest and digestion.

Neurons

Neurons are a part of the nervous system; they transmit electrical and chemical signals. They
have a cell body, dendrites and an axon.

● Dendrites receive incoming signals
● An Axon transmits signals away from the body to other neurons.

Neurons can communicate with each other through synapses, these are specialized connections
where neurotransmitters are released and go from one neuron to another. Neurons are
supported and protected by Glial cells, they help maintain the structure and solidarity of the
nervous system. There are different types of Glial cells:

● Astrocytes
● Schwann cells
● Microglia
● oligodendrocytes
