Introduction
Telehealth is an e-health system that uses telecommunications technology in health care delivery,
information, and education (Gajarawala & Pelkowski. 2021). Telehealth covers similar services
and in-person visits such as medical education, remote patient monitoring, patient consultation
via videoconferencing, wireless health applications, and transmission of imaging and medical
reports (Gajarawala & Pelkowski. 2021). Telehealth allows clients to receive care while they are
in their homes. These technologies help patients and their health professionals to interact
without having to be in the same area. Due to the use of these technologies, more clients were
allowed to get the care that they would typically give in the clinic. If video conferencing with a
care provider was not accessible throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, patients go without care.
History and Current Use
Slide 7: In 1971 Lockheed Corporation created Eclipsys which is a computerized physician
ordering system. During the 1980s the institute began studying health records and the benefits of
electronic medical records as well as the Master Patient Index to monitor patients and their
medical information. The Veterans Health Information System and Technology of Architecture
was prepared for general use of computers and the Federal Government invested in (VISTA).
During the late 1980s, Windows software and personal computers became prominent in doctor’s
offices (2018). In the year of 1994 (WHO) World Health Organization endorsed the ICD-coding
standard (2018).
Slide 8: 2004 -President Bush recommended EHR. President Obama signed the HIT for
Economical and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) as part of the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act (ARRA) which was meant for PCPs to adopt EHRs by 2014.
