Breast Abnormalities

OTC meds/caffeine + sodium restriction

meds, reassure pt (normal hormonal)
Breast Assessment (Palpation)
- client supine
- palpate breast w/ 2/3/4th fingers with vertical strip
pattern/small, dime sized circles with light-medium-deep
pressure
Breast Cancer: Risk Factors and Screening
- advanced age, BRCA-1/2 mutations (inherited)
- protective factors: breastfeeding, being active/maintaining
healthy weight
, - Mammography: detects cancers too small for palpation (early
detection = high cure rate), yearly @ 40/every other year @ 55
- Biopsy: most accurate method
Radiation Patient Care
- hand wash w/warm water daily (mild soap), no creams/lotions
- Lymphedema: flex/extend extremities in recovery room,
semi-fowlers, gradual arm/shoulder exercises
Urinary Incontinence Management
- Knack Maneuver: pelvic muscle contraction timed to increase
pressure before/during event causing leakage
Pelvic Organ Prolapse
- Cystocele: protrustion of bladder into vagina
- Rectocele: bulging of posterior wall of vagina from prolapsed
rectum
- rx: Pessary
Uterine Polyps
- soft, red outgrowth of endometrial lining
- s/s: irregular menstrual bleeding, often associated with
infertility
- dx: hystercetomy, u/s
Uterine Fibroids
- myomas/leiomyomatas: benign tumors from smooth muscle of
uterus
- s/s: increased bleeding/duration of cycle
