Unit 9 Assignment 3 - Know the services provided by network
systems
Directory services
Account management
Directory services allow management centralised for accounts used over a local network.
These are usually utilised to support computers and its users. For example, management
accounts allow users to access services such as files and printers, without the permission of
a management account a user wouldn’t be able to gain access. Accounts can be made with a
specific username and password with which users are able to log in and access services or
data. The information or services users access over a network can only be edited or deleted
by an administrator account.
Authentication management
Authentication management consists in managing users and what they can access over a
network. The authentication process is crucial to keep unauthorized users away from
accessing private services or information. Authentication is done by giving each user specific
and unique credentials that only he is allowed to know. When a user inserts correct
credential, it means he is verified and can access the data over the network. Authentication
is also required to give different permission to different kind of users, for example a student
at a college is given specific credentials and some of the websites aren’t accessible by the
students whereas if a teacher inputs his details he is able to access a much wider range of
services and programs.
Telecommunication services:
Email
Email is another type of direct communication, email accounts can be made through
providers such as yahoo, Microsoft and google, once a user has made an account he will
have a personal email account in the form ******@gmail.com, an email account can be
used to send emails to other users as well as receive them in the section called “inbox”.
Emails use protocols such as SMTP to function, users need to be connected to the internet
wirelessly or through wired connection in order to send and receive an email. Emails are the
best ways to communicate with companies/businesses/organisations as any other
communication method wouldn’t be suitable considering the high volume of clients, for
example if a business was to communicate with its clients through video communication it
wouldn’t be able to help all its clients because of the number of calls and the number of
staff available.
