Semester 2 2025 – DUE August 2025; 100% correct
solutions and explanations.
1. INTRODUCTION
This assignment explores four central themes from the study
material: Communication and Media Semiotics, Narrative Analysis,
Film Theory and Criticism, and Media Audience Theory. Each
theme is discussed with reference to relevant theoretical
frameworks, supported by examples from media texts. The section
on communication and media semiotics defines the field, outlines
the characteristics of a sign, and examines different types of signs,
illustrated with visual examples. Narrative analysis is conducted
using the sitcom Modern Family (Season 8, Episode 19: “Frank’s
Wedding”, directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller, 2017), applying
Barthes’ five narrative codes, binary oppositions, and the four
phases of narrative progression. Film theory and criticism are
examined through an analysis of Black Panther (2018),
incorporating Eisenstein’s film theory types, De Putter’s criticism
categories, and examples from auteur directors. Finally, the media
audience theory section applies the Uses and Gratification Theory to
explain why audiences engage with telenovelas, using The Queen
(Mzansi Magic) to illustrate key concepts. The assignment is
structured to provide both theoretical explanation and practical
application, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the topics
discussed.
