Growth: Refers to measurable physical changes in the body, such as increase in
height, weight, and size of organs. It is quantitative and follows a biological

Development: Refers to qualitative changes in abilities, skills, and emotional
maturity. It includes cognitive, emotional, social, and moral progress, enabling a
person to cope with life challenges (CAD1501 Study Guide, Study Unit 1, p. 3).
1.2 Compare and contrast collectivist and individualist cultures in terms of child
development
1.2.1 Definitions:
Collectivist culture: Values group needs above personal goals; prioritises
community and family over the individual (p. 7).
Individualist culture: Values personal independence, rights, and achievements
over group needs (p. 7).
1.2.2 Traits:
Collectivist:
1. Group harmony and cooperation.
2. Rights of the family/community outweigh individual rights.
Individualist:
1. Independence and self-reliance.
2. Personal goals and achievements are prioritised.
