1.2 Social work in correctional centres
1.2.1 Aim of social work (7)
The aim of social work in correctional centres is to:
Facilitate the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders
into society.
Address the social, emotional, and behavioural problems
that contributed to offending behaviour.
Strengthen offenders’ coping mechanisms to deal with
prison life and prepare for release.
Improve offenders’ interpersonal relationships with family,
peers, and community.
, Encourage personal responsibility and accountability.
Promote positive attitudes, self-worth, and law-abiding
behaviour.
Support offenders in accessing rehabilitation programmes
and social resources.
1.2.2 Nature of social work services (4)
Services are rehabilitative and preventative, aimed at
reducing re-offending.
Focus on individual, group, and community-level
interventions.
Emphasise human rights-based approaches.
Delivered in partnership with other professionals
(psychologists, educators, spiritual workers).
1.2.3 Methods used in social work (3)
1. Casework – one-on-one sessions addressing individual
needs.
2. Group work – group therapy, skills training, and support
groups.
3. Community work – liaising with families, communities,
and organisations to support reintegration.
