To cope, he started using alcohol at age 12 and later progressed to drugs such as crack cocaine and heroin. He also displayed self-mutilating behaviour, including cutting himself. On the day of the incident, Devon had consumed six beers and got into an argument with his parents. His mother shouted at him to leave, accusing him of only causing problems. Devon, already intoxicated and emotionally volatile, attacked his father from behind with a cricket bat, severely injuring him. His mother intervened, and Devon attacked her as well, leaving both for dead.
