Question 1 [10 marks]
1.1 Explain the difference between "growth" and "development" in the context of
child development. (4 marks)
Growth refers to the quantitative physical changes in the body over time. This
includes increases in height, weight, head circumference, and changes in bodily
proportions. Growth is measurable and largely biological, typically following a
predictable sequence from infancy to adolescence.
Development, on the other hand, involves qualitative changes in a child’s
functioning. It encompasses improvements in cognitive abilities, emotional
maturity, social skills, language, and moral understanding. Unlike growth,
development is multidimensional, influenced by both genetics and environment,
and can be shaped by learning, culture, and experience.
For example, a child may experience growth by gaining 5 cm in height in a year,
while development might involve learning to speak in full sentences, understanding
rules, or forming friendships.
1.2 Compare and contrast collectivist and individualist cultures in terms of child
development. Use examples from the study guide to support your answer.
Your answer should include the following:
1.2.1 Definitions of both cultural types. (2 marks)
Collectivist cultures prioritize group goals over individual desires. Family,
community, and social harmony are central. Individuals see themselves as part of a
larger social unit and are expected to contribute to group well-being.
Individualist cultures emphasize personal autonomy, self-expression, and
independence. The focus is on personal goals and individual rights, and children are
encouraged to develop a strong sense of self and personal identity.
