A literature review is a careful study of existing research, books, and articles
related to a specific topic. It helps a researcher to understand what other people
have already discovered and what questions still need to be answered. According
to Ridley (2020, p. 4), a literature review shows the background and key ideas
around the research topic. Maree (2022, p. 33) also explains that it helps
researchers to find useful theories and research methods that they can use in
their own study. Similarly, Kumar (2023, p. 20) says that a literature review helps
to organise past research so that new research can be built on it.
A literature review is important because it prevents researchers from repeating
studies that have already been done (Leedy & Ormrod, 2021, p. 50). It also helps
to guide the research by showing what gaps exist and what new questions need
to be asked (Creswell & Creswell, 2023, p. 47). Furthermore, it gives the research
credibility by showing that the researcher has good knowledge of the topic
(Maree, 2022, p. 35). A good literature review lays the foundation for meaningful
and well-informed research.
