Naming Organic Compounds
Trivial name: They are names given to familiar compounds widely
used. They are usually simple names for complicated molecules.
However, this is not practical for all the organic compounds as we
would have to memorise millions of names!
Systematic name: The IUPAC (International Union of Pure and
Applied Chemistry) has developed a set of standard rules that
allows every molecule to have a unique name based on the
chain length, main functional group and substituents.
, Prefix Arynes
Side chains are named in the prefix and the number of
carbons in the side chain is used to name it (see "Parent"
to learn about the names) with the ending "yl".
Functional groups may be named as a prefix as well. They
are usually a prefix if they are not the main functional group
in the molecule.
A number is added to show the location of the prefix (side
chain or functional group) on the parent chain.

A functional group is the group of atoms that give the
molecule its chemical properties and reactivity. The main
functional group in a molecule is usually indicated as a
suffix, with a number indicating its position if required.
In the next few pages, we are going to look at some of
the main functional groups in organic chemistry and their
suffixes.
