Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)

Welding process: Resistance Spot-welding Parent material: Stainless Steel

Joint type: Overlap Joint Specification: S/S304

Welding position: PA (Flat) Dimension of test piece: 150mm x 40mm x 3mm

Weld preparation: Run Sequence and Completed Weld:

Method of preparation and cleaning:
1) Removing oil, rust and contaminants using an alcohol solution and degreaser
2) Deburr edges
3) position base metals, ensuring proper alignment and clamp down the position.
4) (Refinement) Hold the workpiece against the top electrode for accuracy.
5) When positioned at desired location pull trigger.
Weld Time: 240ms Squeeze Time: 382ms Current (kA): 7.7

Pre-Current (kA): 4.0 Resistance (μΩ): 78 Material and Thickness: Fe (Iron/Steel) 2mm

Other information:

Personal Protective Equipment and Safety Measures:
- Wear protective Equipment (safety goggles, Overalls, Boots, Gloves)

Cooling Method:
Allow the finished weld to cool naturally

Welding Consumables: Non destructive testing: Visual Inspection

Filler material: Electrodes

Material Type Stainless Steel, 3mm thick Thickness/dimension Two metals
of individual measured at:
material pieces Length: 150mm
Width: 40mm
Thickness: 2mm

Joint type Overlap Joint Position of weld PA
(Example; PA/1F – Flat)

Dimensional Moderate Gas type/mix ratio. N/A
Accuracy

Defects found Initial Weld
Cracking N/A, this defect was prevented because the electrode pressure was set to an
interval that wasn’t high enough to cause excess deformation and stress
points that can develop into cracks.
Porosity N/A, the base metals were properly cleaned using an alcohol solution
preventing contaminants such as oil and dirt to be trapped in the weld
causing porosity.
Weld/Nugget
width, size

The weld nugget’s diameter was 7mm, which was within tolerable range for
the material’s thickness.
HAZ width The HAZ is shown by the discoloration surrounding the weld nugget. Its size
is relative to the diameter of the electrode indicating that the heat input was
localised, which shows that the resistance spot welder was working as
intended.
