Fieldwork: Core Practical 1 - Population Size:
Abundance is a measure of how common something is in an area such as
population size. However, this is impossible to measure by counting, so is instead
estimated by taking samples by quadrates.
Method:
1. Find the area of the ‘field’.
2. Randomly place a quadrat in 20 different areas (coordinate generator for
better accuracy).
3. Count the number of daisies per quadrant (1m²).
4. Work out the average number of daisies per 1m² .
5. Multiply the average by the field area.
