Adult Health Exam 2 Review
1) For Infectious disease the most important thing to do is to break the chain of infection
and you do that by Hand Washing/Hand hygiene. To break the chain of infection depends
on the infection we are trying to prevent, but generally speaking and universal precaution,
The most important one is hand washing or hand hygiene.
2) If we start any patient on a new medication especially Antibiotic and they develop rash
or they develop severe diarrhea, The first thing we tell them to do is “They should
contact their health care provider”
3) Herpes Simplex virus-1 is usually above the waist The symptoms are Burning and
Tingling sensation usually 2-3 days and the Blister develops.
4) Herpes Simplex virus-2 is usually below the waist, and they can take Antiviral
medication and sitz bath to help with the pain and itchiness.
5) We treat Herpes Simplex Virus 1,2 and Herpes Zoster with Antiviral medication that
ends with “CLOVIR” (clovir) like Acyclovir.
6) Candidiasis, Candida Albicans are seen in patients that are immunocompromised like
HIV, Cancer, diabetes, and other patients with comorbidities.
7) Impetigo causes Blisters around the mouth and nose, and they cause crust. It’s a Bacterial
infection that is highly contagious and is transmitted by contact, We teach the patient to
always take the medication prescribed and to take daily bath and showers with
Bactericidal soap.
8) Cellulitis is an infection of the superficial skin, which causes redness, warm, pain and
may lead to sepsis if it is left untreated.
9) We may elevate the leg of patient with cellulitis above the heart.
10) Psoriasis is a white silvery scales, Pt should use lotion and gently around plaques. Very
important for this patient to prevent infection, they should avoid scratching it and to
watch for signs and symptoms of infection. Patient should also know what triggers like
, stress or medication. To know the cause or the offending agent.
11) Acne Vulgaris is usually treated with Topical agents like benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics
like tetracycline or doxycycline or systemic medications.
12) It is important for patient with Contact Dermatitis to wear cotton clothing and to apply
corticosteroids and to avoid irritants like perfumes, dusts, pets and any substances or
triggers.
13) In a patient with Atopic Dermatitis, wearing cotton clothing is very important, using a
humidifier is also important, likewise applying moisturizing lotion is equally important,
Because with Atopic Dermatitis everything is dry.
14) There are 3-stages of Lyme Diseases, Lyme Diseases is caused by White Tail Deer
Stage1- bullseye rash accompanied with flu like symptoms within the first 3- 30 days
Stage 2- joint pain, memory loss, motor issues, adenopathy, cardiac problems, facial
nerve palsy (Neurological symptoms)
Stage 3- arthritis, neuropathy, myalgia, myocarditis (May last up to a year)
If left untreated will result to neurological problems
15) Pediculosis is the same as Lice. If we see their nest, we remove them with comb
16) There are four stages of Pressure Ulcer. The Elderly and bedridden are both @ risk for
pressure ulcer. The Elderly loose subcutaneous tissue which put them at high risk for
pressure ulcer, when they develop pressure ulcer Never apply moisturizer on pressure
ulcer, repositioning and keeping the area dry is very important in promoting healing.
17) Stage 1 pressure ulcer is superficial non blanchable pressure area while stage 2 is fluid
filled Blister. For stage 3 pressure ulcer they will need food high protein diet

18) Who is @ risk for Kaposi Sarcoma? Immunocompromised patients, they look
reddish/purple with dark blue papules.
19) Melanoma, it is very important to control patient’s pain.
20) Basel Cell Carcinoma, who is @ high risk? Those who get sunburn, how do we
decrease the risk? Avoid sun prolong sun exposure between 10am to 4pm
