MCN 273 Simulation Preparatory Work
Reminders: Please check your course calendar to verify your scheduled simulation date, time,
and campus. Preparatory work will be reviewed by the simulation faculty at the beginning of
the day. Simulation is an on-campus clinical experience: Wear your uniform, MNSON
identification badge, and bring all your equipment to simulation including stethoscope, penlight, pen,
and watch.
Clinical Outcomes for Simulation Experience:
1. Initiate and maintain therapeutic communication with patients in person and through telehealth.
2. Using critical thinking, perform a focused assessment on an intrapartum patient through telehealth
and in person including fetal monitoring and labor assessment.
3. Implement SBAR reporting to healthcare providers and professional patient/family communication.
4. Identify factors in mother’s health and labor history that can influence the newborn's physiological
status.
5. Perform assessments of the newborn at delivery (APGARs).
6. Assess the postpartum patient in a timely and coordinated manner.
7. Educate the newly delivered mother on postpartum care.
8. Identify risk factors for and signs/symptoms of postpartum hemorrhage.
9. Perform appropriate nursing interventions for the patient experiencing postpartum hemorrhage.

Preparatory Questions:
Answer these questions and bring them to your scheduled simulation.
1. Identify safety concerns of the intrapartum patient.
a. Hemorrhage
b. Infection

2. How can the nurse support the patient and family during labor?
a. Communicate effectively and make sure the patient and family understand each step in
the labor process
b. Make sure the patient and family feel supported and advocate for them if needed
c. Monitor the patient and the baby
d. Educate the mother about labor and what to expect
e. Care for the mother and baby effectively postpartum
3. What assessments are necessary through the duration of the intrapartum period and to evaluate
labor progression?
a. Palpate the abdominal area
