General Information
Lesson Title: One-Day 2nd Grade Lesson Plan Based on The Boxcar Children
Subject(s): Reading
Grade/Level/Setting: 2nd grade class of 20 students sitting in groups of 4. There are four
ELL students, 2 gifted and talented children, and 2 students with IEP’s.
Prerequisite Skills/Prior Knowledge:
Things that students should know from prior lessons: Phonemic Awareness and Phonics
Recognize individual sounds in words (phonemes): Students should be able to identify and
isolate sounds in words like /c/ in “cat” or /sh/ in “ship.”
Blend sounds to make words: They should be able to blend individual sounds to read simple
words (e.g., /k/ /a/ /t/ → "cat").
Segment words into individual sounds: They should be able to break down words into their
component sounds, such as identifying the sounds in “dog” as /d/ /o/ /g/.
Recognize letter-sound correspondences: Students should be able to recognize the common
sounds associated with letters and letter combinations, such as knowing that "ch" makes the /ch/
sound as in "chocolate.
Standards and Objectives
State/National Academic Standard(s)

solving, and empathy.
• Students will use text features such as chapter titles and illustrations to
support comprehension.
Students will need to fill out a worksheet answering these questions and score at least an 85% on
accuracy
Assessment
Summative
My choice of summative assessment would be an end of book multiple choice assessment that
focuses on vocabulary and comprehension questions. Students must score a 75% or higher to be
considered proficient.
Formative
The teacher will have students complete a “5Ws and How” graphic organizer to record key story
elements during reading time. This helps students analyze the structure of the story using specific
textual details. Students will need to be able to answer these questions with 90% accuracy to be
considered proficient.
Materials
• The Boxcar Children (early reader edition or excerpts)
• Graphic organizers
• Chart paper and markers
• Anchor chart for vocabulary
