Antimigraine by constricting cranial blood vessels
Contraindications
CAD, cerebrovascular disease, HTN, CV disease, renal or hepatic disease,
epilepsy, pregnancy
Potential side effects or adverse reactions
N, V, D, dizziness, myalgia, cardiac dysrhythmias, coronary artery
vasospasm, MI, tingling, warm or cold sensation, numbness, vertigo,
flushing, pain at injection site
Potential interactions
Ergotamine
prolongs vasospastic effects- do not use within 24 hours
MAOI's and SSRI's -
increased effect of sumatriptan (toxicity)
do not use within 14 days
Nursing Considerations
Monitor for migraine warning signs, give med as soon as symptoms occur
Give patient a non-stimulating environment while recovering from migraine
Monitor liver and kidney labs
Instruct on use of SQ administration, including dosing
Don not give with SSRI's or MAOI's
Patient and family teaching
Avoid triggers
Report s/s of hypersensitivity
Use exactly as prescribed
This med stops migraines, not prevents them
Do not use if pregnant
