• Calotypie was (te) pictoralistisch maar reproduceerbaar.

• Daguerreotypie was realistisch scherp maar niet
reproduceerbaar.

• Een tussensweg is de logische volgende stap.

• 1847: Abel Niépce de Saint Victor.

• Glasplaat als drager.

• Eerst met albumine, later collodium.

• Zoektocht naar betere/goedkopere alternatieven.

• 1851: Frederick Scott Archer

• Stelt het natte collodium procédé op punt.

• Bijna hele 19de eeuw gebruikt.

Voordelen:
-Lichtgevoeliger (seconden i.p.v. minuten).
-Negatief/positief (reproduceerbaar).
-Scherpte was oké.
-Goedkoper dan voorgangers.
-Geen patent/vrij te gebruiken.

Nadelen:
-Emulsie egaal verspreiden moeilijk.
-Plaat moet nog nat zijn bij belichting.
-Veel materiaal nodig.
-Moeilijk op locatie.
-Breekbaar.
-Stof.
