QUESTION 1
Title: The Role of New Media in Advancing National
Development and Indigenous Epistemologies in the Global
South
Introduction
In recent decades, the proliferation of new media technologies
has fundamentally transformed communication, participation,
and access to information, especially within the Global South.
These digital tools—ranging from mobile applications to social
media platforms—have been harnessed by governments, civil
society, and individuals to drive national development agendas.
At the same time, there is growing recognition of the potential of
new media to revive and promote indigenous African
epistemologies, long marginalised by colonial and Western
hegemonies. This essay critically examines the extent to which
new media support national development programmes in areas
such as poverty alleviation, population control, political
development, economic growth, literacy, and employment
creation. It further discusses how new media platforms
contribute to the development and promotion of African
indigenous knowledge systems.
