QUESTION 1 [30 MARKS]
1.1 Define the following: (20 marks)

, a. Particle:
A particle is the smallest unit of matter that retains the
properties of a substance. In physical science, particles include
atoms, molecules, ions, and subatomic particles such as
protons, neutrons, and electrons. These particles can be
discrete or part of a larger system, and they are fundamental
in understanding the structure of matter and energy
interactions.
b. Atomic model:
An atomic model is a scientific theory that describes the
structure and behavior of atoms. Over time, different models
have been proposed:
 Dalton’s model (1803) saw atoms as solid spheres.
 Thomson’s model (1897) introduced the "plum pudding"
model with electrons.
 Rutherford’s model (1911) proposed a dense nucleus with
electrons orbiting.
 Bohr’s model (1913) introduced quantized orbits for
electrons.
 Quantum mechanical model (modern) treats electrons as
existing in probability clouds called orbitals.
These models help explain atomic behavior, bonding, and
energy levels.
