Question 1: Curriculum Leadership [30 marks]
1.1. Who should be responsible for curriculum leadership? [15 marks] (300–500
words)
In the school context, curriculum leadership should be a shared responsibility
between the school principal, Heads of Department (HoDs), and subject/grade-
level educators. While the principal plays an overarching role in setting the strategic
vision and supporting a conducive teaching and learning environment, the HoDs and
subject specialists are most directly involved in the day-to-day curriculum
implementation.
For my subject, [insert your subject, e.g., Life Sciences], and grade level, [insert
grade], the HoD should take the lead in curriculum leadership, but this should be done
collaboratively with educators. HoDs ensure that educators are familiar with the
Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), plan curriculum pacing,
and provide pedagogical support. Educators, in turn, are responsible for implementing
the curriculum in their classrooms and adapting it to the needs of their learners.
Key responsibilities and actions of effective curriculum leadership include:
Developing a curriculum plan that ensures coverage of all learning outcomes
and assessment standards.
Providing instructional support, such as workshops or peer observations, to
build teacher capacity.
Monitoring curriculum implementation, including lesson planning,
assessment, and learner performance.
Encouraging innovation in teaching strategies to cater to diverse learner
needs.
Facilitating reflective practice, where teachers discuss what works and what
needs improvement.
