Mrs. Merrill is in a unique position regarding state and local content
standards. She has been a teacher in this District for over 30 years and,
through that time, has worked closely with administrators to modify content
standards at the state and local levels. She informed me that she has helped
write the standards to where they are today. This also means she has
intimate knowledge of them, so her views on their use may differ slightly
from some. She feels that they guide how teachers should set their
curriculum. The content standards provide a guideline for teachers to meet
the main topics and skills needed in their field. She says this has been going
wonderfully in our District, with most students meeting standards above
their grade levels.
Mrs. Merrill believes that one of her school district's most significant
problems is apathy and attributes this mainly to social media, screen time,
and the college admissions process. She believes that due to increased
screen time and social media, students have switched to no longer caring as
much about their grades. She has said that it is much more common to
come across a student who does not care what their grades are over one
that does. She has said college acceptance has become a problem as well.
She has friends in admissions at the local University who say they now
accept students with a 1.5 GPA and up. This has been a drastic change from
a 3.4 GPA fifteen years ago. Mrs. Merrill believes that if the students have
no reason to work towards excellence, most will do the bare minimum to
reach the next level.
Mrs. Merrill is comfortable with her self-identity when it comes to
teaching. She has over 30 years of experience in our district. She is
extremely confident in her teaching and her students' success. She
struggles with one of the most common teacher-related issues. Occasionally,
she wonders if she is doing enough for her students. She informed me that
she would occasionally wake up in the middle of the night worrying about
one or many students and wondering if she had done all she could to
prepare them for success. It all becomes worth it for Mrs. Merrill when she
sees her students walk across the stage on graduation day. A wave of
emotions sweeps over her, seeing the accomplishment. She is full of love,
pride, and ease. She knows that she has done her job at this moment
regardless of the year's mental, physical, and emotional struggles.
Mrs. Merrill firmly believes that professional development is
significant and necessary in Maine to meet the state-required 90 contact
hours to recertify. She takes classes through Echoes & Reflections to help
integrate the Holocaust and its materials into her curriculum. This, on top
of courses to improve technology skills, upcoming topics, and how to deal
with AI, have all become a vital part of her continued growth. Mrs. Merrill
also stated that BER courses and local contact hours are essential to help all
teaching staff improve themselves. She compared this process to getting a
new haircut; it's uplifting for a teacher who may feel stuck in a rut.
