What are the Key Differences Between the 'International,' 'Global,' and 'Planetary'? Why Are
These Important?
Introduction
Although the international, global, and planetary agreements are intertwined, major
differences exist between the three. For instance, international relations or agreements refer to
how two or more countries interact, mostly in cultural, economic, and political relationships. As
such, international relations focus on the associations between non-governmental and nation-
state institutes concerned with security, economics, and politics. On the other hand, global
agreements refer to agreements between two nations or more focused on solving an existing
environmental concern, such as climate change. Furthermore, planetary refers to the whole
planet earth, consisting of the atmosphere, geology, and ecosystems. In most cases, planetary
addresses environmental problems such as biodiversity loss and climate change.
The Cold War started after the end of the 2nd World War, which resulted in rapid human-
initiated shifts in the operation of the Earth System. The trends observed over the years illustrate
that the makeup and structure of the earth system are currently being transformed to the point
that they are fully changed. As such, human actions have significantly impacted the world and
the planet. Human actions from one region to another have influenced how nations relate,
resulted in climate change, and created hazardous environmental effects. For instance, in the past
few years, the increased temperatures and warming of the oceans have increased the levels of
nitrous oxide, ocean acidification, land loss due to agriculture, and biodiversity decline.
Harrington (2016) explains that Anthropocene, which depicts the human age, has generated
intense debate from disciplines such as visual arts, philosophy, geology, and climatology. The
evidence from these fields of study has illustrated that human beings are the main geological

agents. Although Anthropocene is mainly founded on human actions and their causes, such as
climate change and environmental effects, international relations are specifically founded on
human beings' entanglements with the broader Globe.
Chakrabarty asks whether the Globe of globalization is similar to the 'globe' of global
warming. He also asks if the word 'globe' portrays two different ways of portraying the planet
earth and the place of human beings. According to Chakrabarty (2018), global warming and
globalization have been the main significant themes that have framed public discussions in
numerous parts of the Globe in the last decade. The last century saw an upsurge in societal,
media, and economic globalization. Global warming and globalization play significant roles in
creating critical pictures of the planet. As such, the 'globe' of globalization connected to
international relations is not similar to the 'global' of global warming.
The 'globe' created by forming the 'world market,' and impacted by issues of difference
and identity has created a global market for organizations, human activities, and the media. As
such, globalization presents a story that is focused on human beings. Although in the past, human
beings struggled between space, sea, and land, which is now over, human beings have spread
worldwide. They have taken control of the waters and the skies and have played significant roles
in establishing order in space, sea, and land.
Therefore, this paper examines the main differences between the international, global,
and planetary, and why the differences are important. The problem statement is, “what are the
main differences between the international, global, and planetary? Why are the differences
important? The paper is subdivided into three sections. Part one of the paper discusses the
"beyond I.R." In this section, issues such as Modernity, coloniality, and climate change have been
contributed by human beings. For instance, Modernity and coloniality are human factors that
