SECTION A: DESIGN-THINKING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING IN THE 21ST
CENTURY (20 Marks)
Question 1: Design-Thinking and Environmental Innovation (10 Marks)
You have been asked to implement a design-thinking project to solve an
environmental problem in your school or community.
Task:
• Identify a specific environmental issue in your local area. (1 mark)
Problem: Too much plastic waste from lunch packaging in the school. Plastic
wrappers, bottles, and bags are thrown away daily, harming the environment and
filling up bins quickly (LPS Global, 2024).
• Apply the design-thinking process (Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test)
to propose a step-by-step solution to this problem. (6 marks)
1. Empathise
Talk to learners, teachers, and cleaners to understand how plastic waste affects
them. Learners say they want cleaner spaces and fewer bins overflowing.
Cleaners say plastic is hard to manage and often not recycled (World’s Largest
Lesson, 2023).
2. Define
, Problem Statement: “How might we reduce plastic waste from school lunches to
make our school cleaner and more eco-friendly?”
3. Ideate
-Brainstorm ideas with learners:
-Use reusable lunch containers.
-Start a “Plastic-Free Friday” campaign.
-Create posters to raise awareness.
-Set up recycling bins with clear labels.
4. Prototype
Choose one idea: Plastic-Free Friday. Design posters, create a pledge wall, and
prepare a checklist for learners to bring plastic-free lunches.
5. Test
Run the campaign for 2 weeks. Observe changes in lunch packaging. Ask learners
and cleaners for feedback. Adjust the campaign based on what works best.
• Suggest how your project will engage learners and stimulate critical and creative
thinking. (3 marks)
This project helps learners:
Think critically about their lunch choices and the impact of plastic.
Be creative by designing posters and slogans.
