Traditional management organization methods are a vertical hierarchical
system concerning organization and discipline with a top-down management
system and a bottom-up responsibility assignment system (Banarto, 2022). With
traditional management practices, management sets goals focusing on
profitability and cost-effectiveness, with little to no modifications in the business
strategy. Traditional management methods are simple. Innovative management methods involve
more networking and collaboration. Among employees, attention is given to individuals’
ideologies and interests. The flexibility that comes with more innovative practices allows an
organization to improve workflows and maintain a competitive edge. Innovation in management
represents a more horizontal hierarchical system with flexibility and fluidity.
In the article from this week, the author states, “The value of information is
directly related to timeliness” (Collyer, 2016). Apple Inc. uses an innovation
management structure that allows increased flexibility and learning, supportive
communication, and low degrees of formalization (Martinez & Garcia, 2011).
This type of management system is great if the employees are self-motivated.
If the organization lacks motivation among their employees, they can suffer in the
innovation of products and services. On the other end of the spectrum, Sears is
ranked one of the worst workplaces. In 2016, the cash equivalents of Sears fell
to a staggering $276 million, from $1.8 billion in 2015 (Peterson, 2016). There
many issues with Sears, from poor quality products, inexperienced workers, and
staffing shortages. The lack of innovation in the workplace results in dated and
unwanted products, a lack of research and development investments, and poor
performance and customer service from untrained employees.
