Psychological Assessment and Well-Being
Question 1: Personal Experience with Psychological Assessment Measures or
Questionnaires
My encounter with psychological assessment occurred during a university career
counseling session, where I completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to
explore career suitability. The process required responding to questions about decision-
making and social preferences, yielding a personality type classification that prompted
valuable self-reflection. However, the experience raised concerns about the MBTI’s
validity, given its reliance on self-reported data, which assumes individuals can
accurately and consistently articulate their traits (Pittenger, 2005). This assumption
overlooks the fluidity of personality, as my responses might have been swayed by
transient factors like mood, revealing a tension between the tool’s static categorization
and the dynamic nature of human behavior. Moreover, the philosophical stance that
personality types predict career fit risks oversimplifying complex individual aspirations,
potentially leading to misinformed decisions. The broader implication is that
psychological assessments, while useful for guidance, require contextual interpretation
by skilled professionals to mitigate biases and ensure meaningful outcomes, particularly
in high-stakes settings like career planning.
