ES2B0 – Fluid Mechanics
Example Questions (Set V)
Question 1: U‐Tube manometer + Pitot tube
In figure 1 the flowing fluid is CO2 at 200C. Neglect losses. If and the
manometer fluid is Meriam red oil (SG=0.827), estimate and the gas flow rate in
3
m /h.

Question 2: Dimensional analysis
Under laminar conditions, the volume flow Q through a small triangular‐section pore of side
length b and length L is a function of viscosity , pressure drop per unit length p/L, and b.
Using the pi theorem, rewrite this relation in dimensionless form. How does the volume
flow change if the pore size b is doubled?
Question 3: Dynamic similarity
When tested in water at 200C flowing at 2 m/s, an 8‐cm‐diameter sphere has a measured
drag of 5 N. What will be the velocity and drag force on a 1.5‐m‐diameter weather balloon
moored in sea‐level standard air under dynamically similar conditions?
