The short story tells the tale of Ilse who is secretly in love with the cricket captain of at school. Ilse struggles to
express herself in words but uses photos to communicate. She loves using a film camera rather than a digital
camera even though it’s more expensive. Every Saturday, Ilse has a ritual – she goes to the photoshop to get
her photos develop. Then, while she waits, she browses around in the book and CD shop and enjoys a
cappuccino afterwards while she looks at her photos. She then keeps the ones she likes and tears up the ones
she doesn’t. I
Ilse’s mom passed away when Ilse was 14 years, and her father still mourns the loss of his wife. Ilse’s mom was
a very successful photographer.
Ilse likes the cricket captain of the school. She especially loves his voice.
She leaves photos for the cricket captain in 3 specific places:
1) In this Math's book
2) In his cricket kitbag next to the field
3) In his pencil bag in the Afrikaans class.
One Friday at second break, Ilse overhears the cricket captain laughing and joking about his “secret admirer”
who must be some psycho chic. This upsets Ilse very much and she confided in her best friend Nazli.
Ilse then does not take photos for 2 weeks. Then one day, she goes to the photoshop again and then the boy
beyond the counter confesses to her that he has kept all her torn-up pieces of photos and give it to her. He
then confesses that he is her secret admirer and asks her to go and enjoy a milkshake.
