CUS3701 Assignment 3 (DETAILED ANSWERS) 2025 - DISTINCTION GUARANTEED - DISTINCTION GUARANTEED - DISTINCTION GUARANTEED Answers, guidelines, workings and references , ,..... QUESTION 1: READ THE EXTRACT Mr Metsi, the principal of Mabotse Secondary School, has launched a programme to enhance curriculum delivery. The programme aims to improve learner engagement and learning outcomes. Mr Moeng, the physical science teacher, noticed that his learners struggled to engage during practical experiments. He welcomed the initiative hoping that integrating new teaching strategies could make physical science more accessible and comprehendible. This was supported by Mrs Lebepe, the English teacher who cited that learners struggle to analyse literature, affecting their comprehension and performance. After attending the professional development workshop, all teachers at the school were encouraged to implement the teaching methods that are fit for their respective subjects to improve curriculum delivery. Mr Moeng and Mrs Lebepe decided on the following methods: • Problem Solving. • Flipped classroom. • Simulation. Answer the following questions based on the extract and use your textbook as a guideline: 1.1. Identify and analyse how each of these strategies can address the challenges Mr Moeng and Mrs Lebepe faced in their respective subjects. (6) 1.2. Discuss how the problem-solving strategy enhances curriculum implementation. (9) [15] CUS3701 ASSESSMENT 03/2025 QUESTION 2 “THE POWER OF TEAMWORK” Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common goal. It is an important skill, not just in school but in everyday life. Whether working on a class project, playing a sport, or helping at home, teamwork makes tasks easier and more enjoyable. In a team, each person has a role to play. For example, in a soccer team, some players focus on scoring goals while others defend. If everyone plays their part and supports one another, the team is more likely to succeed. However, teamwork is not always easy. It requires good communication, respect for others’ opinions, and the ability to solve problems together. One of the benefits of teamwork is learning from others. You gain new perspectives when you work with people with different skills and ideas. Another advantage is that teamwork builds friendships and strengthens relationships. Working together also teaches you how to handle disagreements and work toward solutions. Remember, being a good team member means listening, helping others, and doing your best. Teamwork is not just about winning but about learning and growing together. 2.1 Formulate six (6) questions based on the extract. NB. The questions must meet the criteria for good questioning. • The questions must be set at six various cognitive levels according to Bloom’s taxonomy in your textbook. • Each question must be on a different cognitive level. No repetition. • Indicate each time on which level of Bloom’s taxonomy the question lies. NB. The questions must be based on the extract, one mark for the question and one for correctly identifying the cognitive level. (12) 2.2 Psychomotor and Affective Domains based on the following extract. CUS3701 ASSESSMENT 03/2025 GARDENING Gardening is an excellent way to learn practical skills while fostering emotional growth. Planting seeds, watering plants, and caring for a garden require patience, consistency, and responsibility. These actions develop motor skills as learners handle tools like spades, watering cans, and trowels. Gardening also teaches valuable life lessons. Learners develop empathy and care as they nurture plants and observe their growth. It instils a sense of accomplishment and boosts confidence when they see the results of their hard work, such as blooming or ripening fruits. Working in a garden promotes teamwork and collaboration, as learners often work together to achieve common goals, like creating a vegetable patch. Additionally, outdoor time can help learners feel more connected to nature, improving their mental well-being. 2.2.1. Identify two examples of activities in the extract involving the psychomotor domain and explain why they belong to this domain. (4) 2.2.2. Identify two examples of experiences in the extract involving the affective domain and explain why they belong to it. (4) [20] QUESTION 3 Many teachers in the district struggle to adapt to teaching methodologies and assessment practices due to a lack of familiarity with the revised content, inadequate pedagogical skills, and limited access to resources. The district has proposed in-service teacher training programmes to address these challenges and ensure teachers can effectively implement curriculum changes. These programmes aim to equip teachers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to meet the demands of the updated curriculum and improve learner outcomes. CUS3701 ASSESSMENT 03/2025 Write an essay in response to the extract above. The essay must contain an introduction, a body and a conclusion. You must do research and write a detailed discussion in your own words. Note that you will not earn marks for simply copying from the textbook or plagiarising (using more than 30% of the direct words) from any other source. Your discussion must include the following: 3.1 The significance of in-service teacher training programmes in helping teachers adapt to curriculum changes. (3) 3.2 The benefits of in-service programmes for teachers. (10) 3.3 Specific skills that in-service programmes should prioritise for newly appointed teachers to ensure effective classroom management. (12) [25] QUESTION 4 Whole-school development planning plays a critical role in ensuring that curriculum interpretation and implementation align with the school's overarching goals and the needs of its learners. In your own words (using the textbook as a guideline), discuss how the whole-school development planning approach ensures schools cater to learners’ diverse experiences and needs. [10] QUESTION 5 (Click on the links below as enrichment) White Paper 6 defines inclusive education inter alia as maximising the participation of all learners in the culture and the curriculum of education institutions and uncovering and minimising barriers to learning. In an essay (introduction, body and conclusion), discuss your understanding of barriers to learning and how you will ensure you address barriers to learning in your subject. CUS3701 ASSESSMENT 03/2025 Assessment criteria We will be assessing the following in your answer: • Discuss the concept of ‘barriers to learning’ (don’t copy the textbook word by word). (10) • Elaborate on the goals of White Paper 6. (10) • Address barriers to learning and indicate with YOUR OWN EXAMPLES how you will create a supportive environment and choose assessment tasks to overcome barriers to learning. (10)

, QUESTION 1

1. Problem Solving (Mr Moeng – Physical Science)

Problem solving as a teaching strategy promotes critical thinking, knowledge
construction, and conceptual understanding, rather than rote application of
procedures. For Mr Moeng, whose learners struggled with engaging in practical
experiments, problem solving encourages learners to interact with scientific
problems actively by investigating, hypothesising, testing, and drawing conclusions
in real-life contexts (Booyse, du Plessis & Maphalala, 2020:41). This approach
enhances learners’ understanding of physical concepts by letting them explore
problems, rather than simply performing mechanical experiments without
comprehension. By focusing on developing new knowledge through solving
problems, learners move beyond merely executing steps to understanding
underlying scientific principles (Booyse et al., 2020:40–41).

2. Simulation (Mr Moeng – Physical Science)

Simulation creates a realistic but controlled environment where learners can engage
in ―what-if‖ scenarios, allowing them to experiment without the constraints of real-
world dangers or costs. This helps Mr Moeng simulate lab environments that may be
too expensive, dangerous, or complex to replicate exactly. Through simulation,
learners can experience the cause-and-effect relationships of physical principles,
assume responsibility for decision-making, and develop problem-solving and
analytical skills (Booyse et al., 2020:40). This also increases learner motivation and
deepens understanding of scientific processes.

3. Flipped Classroom (Mrs Lebepe – English)

For Mrs Lebepe, whose learners struggled with literature analysis, the flipped
classroom allows learners to engage with reading material and videos at home and
then discuss, interpret, or critically analyse the content during class. This strategy
provides more classroom time for interpretation, peer discussion, and deeper
engagement, rather than passive reading (Booyse et al., 2020:43–44). It also
